About the Job
As a Release Manager, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth, efficient, and successful delivery of software releases, from code completion to full production deployment. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product, design, marketing, and engineering, to ensure consistent and reliable releases that deliver value. In line with Agile methodologies, you will act as a catalyst for positive change, you empower teams to self-organise, removing blockers, and continuously improving release processes to drive team effectiveness and product quality. Your role will be pivotal in managing the full software delivery lifecycle (SDLC) and ensuring releases meet both internal team expectations and customer needs.
The role and your responsibilities
1. End-to-End Release Planning & Coordination
- Collaborate with development, product management, marketing, and other teams to plan and execute full releases, ensuring alignment across all functions.
- Lead the release planning process using Agile methodologies, ensuring that the full SDLC is considered, from initial development through to deployment.
- Coordinate across all involved teams to ensure that dependencies, risks, and resources are identified and managed, with clear communication across teams and stakeholders.
- Actively remove blockers, foster collaboration, and continuously support the teams to maintain release momentum.
2.Continuous Improvement
- Act as a catalyst for positive change by facilitating effective collaboration and communication and removing obstacles that hinder team progress.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement by facilitating collaborative sessions, encouraging feedback loops, and iterating on processes to increase team effectiveness and efficiency.
- Foster Agile values within cross-functional teams, supporting the adoption and application of Agile principles throughout the release process.
- Empower teams to self-organise and make decisions that drive release success while providing guidance and support when needed.
3. Beta Program & Testing Oversight
- Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to define and prioritise the scope of beta releases and engage customers for valuable feedback.
- Oversee beta testing activities, ensuring feedback is gathered, issues are resolved, and product quality is ensured.
- Support internal teams in utilising beta insights to optimise product features and ensure alignment with customer expectations.
4. Release Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure all releases meet our internal quality standards, identifying and resolving any issues promptly.
- Define release readiness criteria and work with cross-functional teams to monitor progress, ensuring releases stay on track and meet expectations.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives, including retrospectives and lessons learned, to optimise the release process and enhance product delivery.
- Leverage feedback loops from stakeholders to continuously refine release management practices, making each release more efficient and impactful.
5. Release Documentation & Communication
- Maintain comprehensive and clear release documentation, including release plans, timelines, and dependencies, to keep stakeholders informed.
- Provide clear, concise communication tailored to different audiences, ensuring all stakeholders have the information they need to make informed decisions.
- Ensure that the documentation is updated in real-time to reflect changes or new developments in the release process.
6. Agile & SDLC Integration
- Support the full SDLC process, from planning and development to deployment, ensuring that all aspects are well-coordinated and efficient.
- Facilitate the alignment of the release process with Agile practices, ensuring value is delivered consistently throughout the lifecycle.
- Leverage Agile tools and techniques to streamline release processes, enhance team collaboration, and improve the predictability of releases.
- Ensure alignment with business goals and customer needs, continuously driving value through efficient release processes.
7. Stakeholder Management & Risk Mitigation
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring alignment on release objectives and expectations.
- Identify risks in the release process and implement mitigation strategies to address potential delays or quality issues before they impact timelines.
- Provide proactive communication to stakeholders, keeping them informed about progress, risks, and issues throughout the release cycle.
8. Release Effectiveness & Efficiency
- Ensure releases are delivered on time, meet quality standards, and align with customer expectations while also being safe, efficient, and scalable.
- Drive initiatives to reduce manual intervention, automate processes, and implement best practices for efficient release management.
- Track and measure key performance indicators (KPIs) related to release quality, speed, and team collaboration, using this data to inform improvements.
Process Optimisation & Automation
- Continuously evaluate and identify opportunities to streamline and optimise the release management process, ensuring maximum efficiency across teams.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to eliminate bottlenecks and improve workflows, enhancing the overall speed and quality of releases.
- Drive initiatives to automate repetitive tasks, reducing manual intervention and minimising the risk of errors, while improving consistency and reliability in release cycles.
Use data-driven insights and feedback to inform process improvements, ensuring that each iteration of the release process delivers greater value and supports scalable growth.
Required experience
- Agile Experience: Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and practices, with experience in planning and executing releases using Agile principles.
- Servant Leadership: Demonstrated ability to support, coach, and empower cross-functional teams to achieve release success while removing blockers and driving continuous improvement.
- Project Management Skills: Strong ability to manage multiple releases, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines while aligning with the broader program and organisational goals.
- Stakeholder Management: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to manage relationships and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Risk Management: Proven ability to identify, assess, and mitigate risks within the release process to ensure smooth delivery.
- Release Management Proficiency: Strong experience with the end-to-end release process, including planning, execution, testing, and post-release evaluation.
- Process Improvement: Proactive in identifying inefficiencies in the release cycle and implementing improvements for better team collaboration, efficiency, and product quality.
- Technical Background: Familiarity with software development tools and methodologies that integrate with Agile and SDLC processes.
