About the Job
We’re looking for a Head of Release Management (Maternity Cover) to lead and shape our release practices across multiple product delivery teams. This is a hands-on leadership role—while you’ll provide strategic direction and line management to a developing team of Release Managers and a Business Analyst, you’ll also directly manage releases for a key product group made up of three delivery teams.
Your mission will be to create and embed a predictable, low-risk, and scalable release process that improves confidence across internal teams and customers. You’ll drive consistency, reduce critical incidents, and play a key role in increasing stakeholder satisfaction with our product delivery approach.
The role and your responsibilities
Team Leadership & Capability Building
- Line-manage and support a developing team of Release Managers and a Business Analyst, focusing on building capability, confidence, and consistency in delivery.
- Coach the team on best practices, helping to mature release operations and support professional growth.
Hands-On Release Management
- Directly own the release lifecycle for a product group with three delivery teams, from planning through to deployment.
- Drive toward predictable delivery outcomes, targeting 90% of releases delivered on schedule with no critical post-release incidents.
- Coordinate dependencies, unblock delivery teams, and manage stakeholder expectations to keep releases on track.
Process Ownership & Improvement
- Establish consistent, repeatable, and well-documented release processes across teams.
- Standardise tooling, templates, and checkpoints to ensure scalable and efficient release governance.
- Identify bottlenecks and implement improvements to streamline delivery, reduce risk, and increase confidence in the release pipeline.
Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication
- Act as the central point of contact for cross-functional release coordination across Product, Engineering, QA, Marketing, and Operations.
- Provide clear, tailored communication for internal and external stakeholders, ensuring transparency of release plans, risks, and outcomes.
- Support initiatives aimed at improving internal satisfaction with product delivery processes, with a goal of achieving 70%+ satisfaction in internal surveys.
Metrics, Reporting & Success Measurement
- Define and track KPIs related to release quality, timeliness, and incident rates.
- Use data and stakeholder feedback to inform process improvements and demonstrate progress against team goals.
- Lead retrospectives and continuous improvement initiatives following each release cycle.
Success in This Role Looks Like
- A scalable, low-risk release process is embedded and trusted across the organisation.
- 90% of releases are delivered on schedule with no critical post-release incidents.
- Documented, repeatable release processes are used consistently across all teams.
- Internal satisfaction with release and delivery processes exceeds 70% in annual surveys.
- The Release Management team is growing in capability, confidence, and consistency.
Required experience
- Proven experience in release management or software delivery, with a mix of strategic oversight and hands-on execution.
- Strong line management or team leadership experience, ideally in growing or maturing teams.
- A deep understanding of Agile and SDLC processes, with the ability to drive improvements without adding unnecessary overhead.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate delivery complexity into clear updates.
- A proactive, solutions-oriented mindset, driven by data, feedback, and continuous improvement.
- Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, CI/CD systems, and release tracking dashboards.
